Accession was commissioned by Garry Stewart’s Australian Dance Theatre for The World’s Smallest Stage, a season developed during lockdown in response to the constraints of domestic space.

Choreographers were invited to create new works within a 2m x 2m area — a limitation that became a catalyst for invention.

Drawing on the nursery rhyme Jack and Jill, Accession reimagines a familiar childhood story through a darker and more ambiguous lens.

Beneath its simple surface lies a world of suspicion, instability and fractured truth: did Jack simply fall, or was he pushed? Within a tightly contained frame, Accession opens a charged theatrical space where innocence gives way to unease, and a well-known tale begins to unravel.
